The unit provides specialist support and advice on equality legislation and any aspects of diversity which includes age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation to ensure the constabulary operates in a fair and equitable manner.
The main aim of the unit is to ensure Derbyshire Constabulary complies with its legal obligation to meet the general equality duty which is set out in the Equality Act 2010. The purpose of the equality duty is to integrate consideration of equality and good relations into the day to day business of the public authorities. The duty requires equality considerations to be reflected into the design of policies and the delivery of services. Those public authorities subject to the duty must when carrying out their function, give thought to the need to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation against people with a protected characteristic, as well as advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
The general equality duty is underpinned by the ‘specific duties,’ a secondary piece of legislation which details what public authorities are required to do to demonstrate legal compliance. The Equality Unit is responsible for the publication of equality information about the workforce and service users and the development and publication of equality objectives. To this end, the unit works closely with the other equality groups detailed below.
Independent Advisory Group
The force regularly seeks guidance and support from this objective body that is made up of individuals from the whole range of backgrounds across the county to ensure operational and procedural equality and fairness.

External Disability Reference Group
Derbyshire Constabulary’s External Disability Reference Group meets three times a year with an aim to effectively consult with disabled groups/people and allow for all parties to disseminate information accordingly. This group is made up of representations from many organisations, for example, Disability Direct, Derbyshire Autism Services Group, Action on Hearing Loss (RNID), Voice UK, Derby Mind, Alzheimer’s Society, Changing Minds Forum, Derbyshire Age UK amongst others.
Staff Support Networks
Derbyshire Constabulary is committed to a policing style which meets the differing needs of the communities it serves and it is dedicated to promoting equality within its own workforce.
In addition to our staff associations and independent police chaplains, we offer a range of networks who support diversity within the force.
They allow police officers and staff to meet, receive support and raise issues of common interest. Each network is open to any officer or member of staff who supports the aims and values of the individual network.
