Police in Chesterfield give lifesaving support to man in town centre

Posted on 29th May 2015

Safer Neighbourhood officers in Chesterfield have helped to save the life of a man after they saw he was unresponsive.

PC’s Stephen O'Callaghan and Ashley Taylor from the town’s Safer Neighbourhood team were on patrol on Beetwell Street on Friday, May 29 when they saw a man at the bottom of the steps near to the library.

As the officers approached to check on his condition, the man was unresponsive. The pair sat him upright to alleviate pressure for him to breath and called for an ambulance.

East Midlands Ambulance Service arrived at the scene a short time later and took the 50 year old man to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

PC O’Callaghan from the Chesterfield Town Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This is a prime example of being in the right place at the right time. If we had not have spotted the man sooner, the situation could have been much worse and I am only glad myself and PC Taylor were able to support him whilst waiting for proper medical attention. This man is now in the right hands in hospital and it is a relief to hear his condition has improved.”
