Youngsters in Pilsley become crime scene investigators for a day of events with local officers

Posted on 1st October 2015

Young children in Pilsley swapped the playground for a crime scene as they were joined by Safer Neighbourhood officers and a forensic investigator.

Members of the North Wingfield, Pilsley, Stonebroom and Shirland Safer Neighbourhood Team and Derbyshire Constabulary Crime Scene Investigator, Helen Rock, visited Pilsley Primary School on Friday, September 25 to host a forensic investigation day.

Youngsters were split into groups and each took on a different task before swapping roles so they all got the chance to complete each job.

One task was to take fingerprints before trying to identify which print pattern matched each person. The children also had to dust a coffee jar for finger and foot prints before using a special ink pad to take each other’s footprints.

After the forensic sessions, youngsters learnt about policing since Victorian times and team members talked about the first police officers in the country. Pupils also got to try on both new and old pieces of uniform as well as have a go with policing equipment including handcuffs and batons.

PCSO Kate Hodnett was there on the day. She said: “The event was a huge success with both children and teachers enjoying the activities and learning more about the role of officers in their local community.

“It is really great to be able to host these types of sessions for local young people because it gives them an insight into our job and will hopefully inspire them to take up a career in policing in the future.”
