Number plate security event in Alvaston following several number plate thefts

Posted on 22nd May 2015

Police in Alvaston are set to host a number plate security event following a spate of number plate thefts in Derby East over the last few weeks.

Officers from the area’s Safer Neighbourhood team will be on hand at the Sainsbury’s store just off Osmaston Park Road on Friday, May 29 from 10am to 2.30pm (with a lunch break between 12pm and 12.30pm).

The partnership event, alongside crime prevention staff from Derby Homes, has been organised following a spate of vehicle registration plate thefts in the Derby East section.

Drivers will be able to have special security screws fitted to their number plates for free, to make them difficult to remove in a bid to deter this type of crime.

Sergeant Simon Hawley from the Alvaston Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Stolen number plates can be used by criminals to hide the identity of vehicles which are used to commit crime. It is important that victims of this crime report the theft to police as soon as possible. This gives opportunity for officers to stop any vehicles bearing the stolen plates before they are involved in any offences.

“By having these free screws fitted to your vehicle, you become less likely to be a victim of this type of crime. I would urge anyone who is interested, to come to the store, have a chat with officers and find out more.”
