Most of the evacuated residents in Newhall can return to their homes

Posted on 27th July 2014

Officers investigating the discovery of potentially volatile substances in a flat in Newhall are allowing most residents to return home.

Superintendent Paul Callum, who is in charge of today's operation, said: "I'm pleased to say that everyone, apart from the three immediate neighbours of the flat on Belvoir Crescent, can now return to their homes.

"We are content that there is no longer any potential danger to residents in the area.

"I would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation.  Their safety was paramount, which is why we asked them to leave their homes last night."

A 55-year-old man, who was arrested yesterday, is still in police custody.

Anyone who has seen anything suspicious in the area recently should ring the police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
