Safer Homes

SaferHomeslogoSafer Homes aims to raise awareness among householders about what can be done to reduce the chances of having their homes burgled.

As well as having property stolen, and possibly damage caused to the home, burglary victims often feel violated as individuals.

Key facts

  • Most burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves and take place when the house is empty.
  • A third of all break-ins occur through a back window.
  • In 2 out of 10 cases, burglars get in through unlocked doors and windows.
  • Once a home has been burgled, the likelihood that it will be targeted again increases considerably. Often a second burglary occurs within a few days of the first. The same, or a different, thief may return to steal property left behind on the first occasion or possessions that have since been replaced.
  • Delays in repairing any damage caused during the burglary and a lack of additional security improvements may also lead to a repeat burglary.

Householders and the use of force against intruders

It's a rare and frightening prospect to be confronted by an intruder in your own home.

Attached in the Related Documents section is a two-page leaflet that explains the law in relation to using force to defend yourself against intruders. The leaflet has been published by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Chief Constables.
